2000 Precision 23 Designed by Jim Taylor, the Precision 23 is easily trailer launched and retrieved, yet is big enough for short cruises with long berths and ample storage below in a very attractive setting. Taylor emphasizes sailing performance with all Precision models. Her tall mast has a fractional sail plan for easy headsail handling. The shrouds are located inboard for a tighter sheeting angle and for walking about the deck with ease. The keel has internal ballast within the fiberglass hull and there is a centerboard controlled by a simple rope to offer nice windward performance. She has a galley unit which includes a stove, dish & cup racks, waste basket, sink and cooler. This boat has a lot of additional gear so she is equipped better than the boat out of the box for racing too.  PHRF 231 General Description: Considered to be a maci-trailerable, the Precision 23 far outstrips many boats in terms of true usable space, both on deck and below. Special emphasis has gone into giving the P-23 her particular bright and uncluttered interior. The bulkheads are intentionally trimmed back to avoid subdividing the visual space. Of special note, the typical intrusive mast compression support has been eliminated by clever use of a rugged overhead support beam fiberglassed to the deck. The especially large companionway, multiple cabin ports and forward hatch contribute to the feeling of light and open space. The double berth forward is generous and there are full sized berths aft which will accommodate 3 more.  The portable head has a dedicated space forward and the fixed galley is aft where it is convenient to both cabin and cockpit.  The Precision 23 hull represents a very careful refinement of the basic form that has proven so successful in all of Precisions well known trailerable cruisers. Lively performance, reliable handling and high stability are all the hallmarks of these designs. They feature a sharp waterline entry, substantial topside flare forward and powerful quarters taper to a shapely transom. This precise combination of features avoids the trim and handling problems that less well balanced hulls suffer when heeled. This design provides a reassuring margin of both reserve buoyancy forward and ensures more knockdown stability. The well proven internally ballasted shoal draft fixed keel with fiberglass centerboard used in the Precision 23 is the most practical solution for combining upwind efficiency and stability. This design allows the dense internal lead ballast to be placed as low as possible for increased stability. And the fiberglass centerboard is easily raised/lowered by a single Dacron line. The centerboard provides lift for great pointing ability yet is easily raised for increased off wind sailing. The P-23 features a simple fractional rig mast that is easy to raise and with her short spreaders and inboard chain plates, upwind performance is impressiv

2003 Precision 23 With today's medium-size family cars, the Precision 23 might well be termed a "maxi-trailerable." It far outstrips existing boats in terms of usable space, both on deck and below, with bulkheads intentionally trimmed back to avoid subdividing the visual space. The Precision 23 hull represents a very careful refinement of the basic form that has proven so successful in all of Precision's trailerable cruisers, featuring "racer sharp" waterline entry, substantial flare in the topside forward, and powerful quarters that taper to a shapely and relatively small transom. This combination of features provides a reassuring margin of both reserve buoyancy forward and "knockdown stability." The well-proven keel-centerboard combination is the most practical solution for combining upwind efficiency with very shoal draft. The long, shallow keel, kick-up rudder, and non-corroding fiberglass centerboard of the P-23 are all essential to her remarkable upwind performance. The fixed portion of the keel not only houses the board completely below the cabin sole, but it also allows the ballast to be placed as low as possible for increased stability. For trailerable boats, winged keels are more of an inexpensive expedient than a sensible design. In order to be effective with the very shallow draft required for trailering, the wings have to be so broad as to be awkward and prone to damage at the launching ramp, and very difficult to work free from the inevitable mud banks. The simple fractional rig of the P-23 features chainplates placed well inboard, another vital ingredient to her impressive speed to windward. Her mainsail is very large in order to provide good performance without the jib when desired. The cockpit is 7 feet 3 inches long, with coamings high enough to keep the crew securely inside, and the low and sleekly-styled cabin house provides excellent visibility forward. Special emphasis has gone into giving the P-23 her particularly bright and uncluttered interior. The typical intrusive mast compression post is replaced by a rugged overhead support beam. The especially large companionway, cabin windows and forward hatch contribute to the feeling of light and open space. The double berth forward is generous, and there are full-size berths aft which will accommodate three, although the expectation is that she will be cruised most often by a family, or perhaps two couples. A space for portable head is forward, and the fixed galley is aft, where it is convenient to both cabin and cockpit. Cushioned backrests amidships provide comfortable seating for up to six. Both seats and coamings are precisely angled for maximum comfort both upright and heeled, the result of very careful ergonomic design development. There is an anchor locker forward, a fuel tank storage bin to port, and a large cockpit locker with storage shelf to starboard.

Designer Comments: The first offerings from PRECISION BOATWORKS nearly 20 years ago were open daysailors with a focus on good all around performance, and they have come full circle with their new PRECISION 185. In the interim, all but one of our eight previous PRECISION designs have featured enclosed interiors as part of their appeal. Only the PRECISION 15 (and PRECISION 15K) have been open boats, offering the joy of small boat sailing in its purest, simplest form. The P-15 design focused on stability, safety, lively performance and reliable handling, and she has been a huge success. The new PRECISION 185 expands on the broad appeal of her smaller sister by adding an extra dose of acceleration and speed to her performance profile. The *big daysailor* type is still probably best defined by the Lightning, Rhodes 19 and Flying Scott, all old favorites introduced nearly forty years ago. There has not been a great deal of innovation and development in this market for some time, and various new offerings have come and gone without making much of an impact. The PRECISION 185 will make her mark by using true state-of-the-art design and construction technology to combine vastly improved ergonomics and higher performance with low weight, low maintenance, and low cost. Comfortable seating, computer-shaped hull and fins, and precise tooling will all contribute to the appeal of this *new century* competitor. Like her smaller sister, the PRECISION 185 features a large, self-draining cockpit, a secure spot for a portable ice chest, practical under-deck storage, straightforward rigging, and high quality hardware. Her swim platform at the transom is an unusual feature usually reserved for large offshore cruisers. In addition to contributing to the fun by getting swimmers back aboard more easily and allowing youngsters to trail their toes in water, this *back porch* can contribute to safety by facilitating boarding from a dinghy, and recovering from an accidental *man overboard* incident more easily and quickly. The performance parameters of the PRECISION 185 are not intended to put her in the realm of a *crash and burn* Australian 18 skiff, but they will give her the kind of acceleration and speed that will turn heads and quicken the pulse when desired. She will offer speed, stability and control over a wide range of conditions that will be the envy of both her classic and contemporary competitors. She will sail beautifully under main alone when shorthanded or in heavy weather. Her broad deck beam and high-volume side decks will help keep her crew dry, and maximize her resistance to capsize. She shares the careful balance and dynamic stability that have earned the PRECISION 15, 165, 18, 21, 23 and 28 their well-earned reputations as lively, reliable performers in all conditions. PRECISION BOAT WORKS continues to focus entirely on small boats, and their long experience and expertise in this market is second to none. They have built all of our PRECISION designs with meticulous care, and their commitment to high- quality construction is unwavering. We share their pride in everything they build, and we are confident that the new PRECISION 185 will quickly earn her place as a worthy addition to their well-respected line.
